The Giro d’Italia, one of the three main cycling races, came to Northern Ireland for its Big Start in May 2014. Further to Rebecca’s volunteering at the World Police & Fire Games in 2013, she got a place on the media team via Volunteer Now. With the event attracting media attention from all over the world, it was an opportunity to learn how such a global sporting event runs its media department. Rebecca was based at the press accreditation centre located in Belfast’s Waterfront Hall helping journalists pick up their passes, photographers bibs and event information. When the Giro D’Italia is in Italy, they don’t have any voluntary help with the media team so the media staff at RCS Sports were happy to receive some help from keen NI volunteers during the busy registration process. Despite the wet weather, the event was hailed a success with Northern Ireland embracing the pink, with even the Lord Mayor of Belfast dying his hair especially for the occasion.
